Plastic pollution does not have a simple solution and Miranda Wang and Jeanny Yao haven’t let that stop them.

Wang and Yao are pioneering a new way in which plastic can be diverted from a landfill or from ending up contributing to a patch of garbage in the ocean.

Their team at BioCellection has developed a way to turn plastics that are not recyclable like polyethylene back into other chemicals.

Treatment for cancer showing results in first human trials

Originally published by Grit Daily.

A cure for cancer with little-to-no side effects seems like something you would see on a Sci-Fi movie. One prick and you are freed from a disease that in our world causes numerous people to suffer everyday.

In Florida alone in 2016, 119,408 new cases of cancer were reported and 44,266 people died of cancer, according to the CDC.

It may sound like a Sci-Fi movie, but Dr. Patricia Lawman and her team at Morphogenesis think that they have created a vaccine-like treatment that does just that.

This organization wants regulations to make technology more human

One San Fransisco-based organization is looking to promote the development of a new measurement of success for big technology companies.

Instead of looking at how much time people spend and trying to get them to spend more, Tristan Harris wants companies to make decisions based on what real-world benefit they create for the user, especially interpersonal connection.

The Center for Humane Technology is a nonprofit started by Harris, a former Google ethicist, Aza Raskin and Randima Fernando.

The decision between food and medicine

A article written for class in 2018.

Omar Soto Hernandez is from Venezuela and came to live in the U.S. about three months ago when he married his wife Blake.

This is what differences he sees between the countries and what he thinks about Venezuela in the past, what has happened to and around him in the present, and what he thinks of the future of Venezuela.

In the past, Hernandez said that he can remember going to the supermarket and buying a basket full of food and being able to purchase soda and candy.

“I remember there were maybe then or sixteen kids of milk and all of them made there.”

Now, he says the situation is opposite.

“Right now we don’t have food…My sister died because basically we don’t have food.”

Founded by Toby McCartney, Nick Burnett and Gordon Reid in 2016, MacRebur is on a mission to change plastic pollution and make the world a cleaner place. This is all inspired by his daughter.

Life as a college-aged druid

Caitlyn Cooper is like many other Flagler College students. She is an art major, has brightly colored hair, and is navigating her freshman year in a new city. What is not so common, however, is she identifies as a witch and a druid.

Druidry is a religion that stems from Celtic beliefs and is centered around the earth and the appreciation of nature, Cooper said. The ancient religion also isn’t centered around deities.

“You don’t have to worship anything to be a Druid,” she said.
